Established to serve Zagreb's diplomatic and expatriate community, the American School of Zagreb (ASZ) opened its doors with just 13 students, laying the foundation for a lasting tradition of international education. Notably, Zagreb was the only non-capital city in the Eastern Bloc to host an American school - a distinction made possible by Yugoslavia's unique non-aligned status under Tito, which permitted the presence of Western-style institutions. On September 23, classes commenced at Tuškanac 46, marking the humble yet visionary beginning of an institution devoted to academic excellence and global citizenship.
