During this past February break, the LEGO Bears, our school's Robotics team, participated in the national robotics competition (First Lego League) organized by the Croatian Robotics Association (Hrvatski Robotički Savez) and held at FER, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. 34 teams registered and 28 teams, from all over Croatia participated in all aspects of the competition this year.
The competition has 4 elements that are scored: Core Values, Robot Design, Robot Game and Innovation projects. Our students, members of the Robotics club, have been preparing since September for these challenges. This year’s theme was called Masterpiece and was focused around Arts and sharing interests with others in the community. Our Lego Bears have decided to pursue the field of holograms to address this need, and they consulted experts to help them with light refraction and marketing strategies. In addition to this innovation project, our team also built and programmed an original robot, students named him Gregory IV, who/which completed a number of nail-biting challenges on the day.
The Lego Bears placed 4th overall in the competition. They also placed within the top three of 3 out of the 4 categories of the competition, taking home the top trophy for ‘Core Values’. Our team was even interviewed for the local news!
The next step is the regional-level competition in Slovenia on 16 March. Wish the Lego Bears team luck as they refine their project and robot and prepare for this even harder competition!
